Introduction to Yoga Nidra (with Recording)

What is Yoga Nidra?

I used to think that yoga nidra was for people who couldn’t be bothered to ‘do’ yoga. Feeling a bit lazy? Let’s do a yoga nidra instead. But now I think it’s actually harder to train the mind by listening and paying attention than by physically moving. Have a go and see for yourself.

This is what Swami Satyananda Saraswati has to say taken from his book Yoga Nidra :

Yoga Nidra – The Blissful Relaxation

Most people sleep without resolving their tensions,

This is termed nidra.
Nidra means sleep, no matter what or why,
But yoga nidra means sleep after throwing off the burdens,
It is of a blissful, higher quality altogether.

When awareness is separate and distinct from the vrittis,When waking, dream and deep sleep pass like clouds,
Yet awareness of atma remains
This is the experience of total relaxation

Relaxation does not mean sleep.
Relaxation means to be blissfully happy,
It has no end.
I call bliss absolute relaxation;
Sleep is a different matter.
Sleep gives only mind and sense relaxation.
Bliss relaxes the atma, the inner self;
That is why, in tantra,
Yoga Nidra is the doorway to samadhi.

What is a resolve or sankalpa?

During yoga nidra you will be asked to come up with your own desire to bring about change for the better. It should be a simple statement. Examples from the book are:

  • I will awaken my spiritual potential
  • I will be successful in all that I undertake.
  • I will be more aware and efficient.
  • I will achieve total health.

You repeat your chosen statement three times in your head at the beginning and towards the end of the yoga nidra, when prompted.
Please be comfortably lying down for yoga nidra, preferably on the floor or a yoga mat, with a blanket and no shoes on. It is optimal to keep your body still and your eyes shut for the 42 minute recording.
